Liberia ist die älteste unabhängige Republik Afrikas und grenzt nordwestlich mit den Flüssen Mano und Moro an Sierra Leone, im Norden an Guinea und an die Elfenbeinküste im Osten, dort bildet der Cavally-Fluß die Grenze.

Der Landesname leitet sich vom lateinischen "liber" (frei) ab.

Der Text stammt von Daniel Bashiel Warner, dem 3. Präsidenten von Liberia, die Musik komponierte Olmstead Luca. Obwohl Luca die Musik zur Hymne erst 1860 komponierte, war der Text bereits zur Unabhängigkeitserklärung im Jahre 1847 zur Nationalhymne erklärt worden.
