Guinea-Bissau liegt an der westafrikanischen Küste zwischen
Senegal und Guinea. Zum Staatsgebiet gehören auch die vorgelagerten Inseln des
Archipelago dos Bijagos.
Der erste Teil des Landesnamens leitet sich vermutlich von dem Berberwort aguinaoui
("schwarz") ab, der zweite Teil, der Name der Hauptstadt, wurde zur
Unterscheidung vom größeren Nachbarland Guinea gewählt.
